Dedicated to the memory of Betty Hodgson

Betty died peacefully in Waterside Grange Care Home , Dinnington, Sheffield at the age of 101. She was first and foremost a York girl. Born in the Groves she attended Haxby Road and Queen Anne Grammar Schools before going on to work in the offices at Rowntree’s and Yorkshire Insurance/General Accident. During the war she worked for Handley Page at the Clifton Aerodrome . Together with her husband Jim and sons Tim and Peter she moved to New Earswick in the early 1950s where she lived until moving into Waterside Grange in late 2016. York remained her spiritual home and it was her expressed wish that at her funeral, donations should be made to St. Leonards Hospice in lieu of flowers. Betty and her family are forever grateful for the love and care which staff at the hospice gave Jimmy in his final illness in 1993. The world that Betty was born into was a very different world to the present day. She lived through a series of momentous global events and radical changes in how we lead our lives. Throughout these changes Betty’s family was always of paramount importance to her and her lasting legacy is in the extended family she leaves behind, her sons, daughters-in-law, eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Betty was a wonderful warm generous lady with a wide circle of friends and a sense of humour and fun which remained undiminished by the cruel onset of dementia in her later years.

Her family will warmly appreciate it if anyone reading this who knew Betty could please consider making a donation to St. Leonard’s in her memory and in that of her beloved husband Jim.
